Destructive chewing is a very common problem that all dog owners face at some point. IT is important to understand that in dogs, chewing is completely natural, especially in puppies or dogs still teething.
Though this is completly normal, it becomes a problem when your dog chews on dangerous or expensive items. Also chewing can be hazardous to your dog, if a piece of chewed material gets suck in your dogs throat, it could suffocate and die.
Dog Chewing
Stop Your Dog From Chewing
Dogs Chew for many different reasons, and if you want to stop dog chewing, it is important to identify what is triggering this behavior.
What causes a dog to chew
* While teething
* Boredom
* Separation Anxiety
* Improper nutrition
* Loneliness
* Seeking attention
* High levels of energy ( lack of activity causes dogs to chew )

Solving Dog Chewing problems
* First of all “prevention is better than the cure” having a dog requires responsibility, don’t leave valuable items laying around so that your dog can get to them, unless your dog has proper obedience training.
* Chewing is natural for dogs, so provide your dogs with tasty chew toys, condition your dog to understand that if he needs to chew, that is what he chews on. Fill his chew toy with his favorite treats and reward him for chewing on it.
* Take your dog out to play, go on a walk, jog, dog park or a dog beach, give him lots of exercise, play games with him fetch, catch obedience training so that he doesn’t have so much energy bottled up inside.
* Until your dog is properly obedience trained, keep him in a confined area, a kennel, dog crate, or you can just section off a corner of your house or yard.

How do you stop your dog from chewing?
How do you stop your dog from chewing EVERYTHING, also discipline?
He is German Sheppard X Border Collie,,,,Gets more than enough attention between me and kids,tried different sprays and coating things. He chews wood, fabric, and breaks his teeth trying to shew metal,,,this can’t be normal..he goes for rides with the family,,completely included,,,i don’t want to give up on him,,we love him and this is the only problem I have but he is destroying too much
Also,,thanks for postings
Give him a chew toy and hit him on the head a little hard for discipline.

Don’t hit him PLEASE! chew toys are obvious but bitter apple no chew spray will keep the dog from chewing the things hes not supposed to .
References :
give them an alternative to whatever they’re chewing on. have plenty of chew toys, bones, toys that make them work (kong toys).
whenever you find them chewing on something they shouldn’t, take it away. firmly AND calmly tell them no. then hand them the alternative. after they start to chew on it, praise them for chewing on the RIGHT thing.
giving lots of attention or getting excited when they do something wrong works to reinforce the behavior. so focus your energy into getting the dog excited and happy when they do the right thing instead.

Do not hit him….take the item he is not to chew and give him something he can chew. Bitter apple or pepper spray work well, you can get them at a good pet store.
Also remember… never call your dog to you to reprimand him, he will never trust coming to you after that.

my dogs as puppies…
Do you think he has separation anxiety? When you leave him a long does he chew MORE and go kinda nuts? If so then I can email you how to treat it.. it’s just kinda long and i don’t want you to overlook it if I post it here. Also how old is he? If he’s a puppy, then you really need to give him time. If not, then I’m thinking that it is sep. anxiety or he’s bored. If you want, you can go to the petstore and get a KONG toy. They are like indestructable. You put cheese or peanut butter in the middle and they go after them.. its hard to get out so it takes them awhile. That’ll distract your dog for awhile, and he won’t be chewing on other things as much. I strongly think you should take him to obedience classes. Dogs love it. If he’s already been to them try Agility courses.. it excersizes them and they also love it. Another thing you can do is try a "mental" workout.. just something that’ll get their mind goin. I do this with my dog all the time.. i’ll get an old blanket (a BIG one) and put a squeaky toy in it,and make it hard for him to get it out. He goes after it for awhile, and when he gets it he probably feels so proud. (he’s gotten smarter now tho and he just barks at me) just try to do things that’ll make them think.

i work with dogs at a shelter.
We had a lab that chewed everything he could get his mouth on, even a door frame (ouch!). He was the best dog we ever had. After he reached a year old he just stopped. Try providing a lot of raw hide chews etc. and patience. We also put his food in galvanized minnow buckets, not so attractive but very sturdy. Good Luck!
